So you think you have diabetes?

This question is posted no less than 5 times daily. I don’t understand it either, in most cases the people have already Google’d the symptoms and listed them in their question. At least two frequent flyers to this site want diabetes.

Today I saw a question wherein the person asked how much insulin he should take for his high blood sugar.

Please, please, please don’t get diagnosed here or seek medical advice. It’s so unbelievably dangerous. To alleviate your concerns let me elaborate on the symptoms you’ve heard about.

Excessive thirst and excessive urination – this is an understatement. This will be so extreme, you’ll think you’re losing your mind. Adults will wet the bed. You’ll think you’re urinating more than you’re drinking. You actually are. Sugar is sticky and sucks up the moisture in your body. Parents often ask me, “How did you know? Kids are always pee’ing and drinking”. Believe me, it may go unnoticed for a day or two, but it’s so over the top you won’t miss it.

Fruity smelling breath, labored breathing, projectile vomiting, sleepiness and extreme hunger - these symptoms are pretty self explanatory.

You can’t catch it, cure it, or get it from eating too much sugar.

The place to address this is at an emergency room. If you’re a teenager, talk to your parents. If your parents dismiss it, talk to your school nurse. If your nurse dismisses it, you don’t have diabetes. They’re not out to get you.

So what’s my question? WHY post it? It’s dangerous, you’re aware that 20 other people just posted it, and you’re clearly capable of online research. Or, use this post to contribute an opinion. Or tell me I’m taking this way too personally. I really love this site. Why am I getting so upset?
LMAO there's two "commercials" in here for lack of a better word. How random.

Thanks for the support and feedback.

That and diet and fitness questions, how to use tampons questions. I suppose people want answers for them specifically to allay their concerns.

Meh, i quite enjoy repeating myself. Helps me revise.

Way to go Mozz! You would think that these people would actually call their doctor or an ER nurse if they believe they might have diabetes instead of depending on the good ol' people in cyberspace!! Why wait around for someone to answer your post when you could actually get treatment if you ARE suffering from this?! Especially with google, webmd, and all the other sites you can go to "self diagnose" yourself! All of these posts irritate the crud out of me as well. YA can be used to get some great information people, but if you really think you are suffering from diabetes, depression, or any other health condition...tell a parent and/or see a doctor!!
Mozz...I don't think you are taking this too personally! ITA with you! I guess those of us who deal with the constant ups and downs, going through numerous test strips a day to make sure our little ones are in the correct glucose range, worrying if they will go low in their sleep, constantly monitoring every mood, food, symptom, how they are doing when we get a little break away from taking care of them, plus knowing all the health problems that may arise as a result, just can't seem to understand why someone would waste their time on here when they could be getting actual help! This disease is dangerous and serious people...wake up and focus on your health and NOT the opinion of others to diagnose you!!!
Ok...sorry for my rant...maybe I take this a little to personally too!

Ever scince I followed Paul braggs advise in his books I've never gotten even a cold for the last 2 years! and I'm 16! Give it a try I did and it is so well worth it, I wish my parents would have brought me up from when I was a baby with the information that he provides.

Why would anyone be insane enough to want diabetes???!!! It is a dreadful condition. I see what my son has to go through everyday battling this disease. No one should wish that upon themselves.

Welcome to Yahoo! Answers.

You realize that you're wasting your time... right?

Of course you do. You're just ranting, aren't you?

The morons aren't likely to go away or do any homework. The best advice I can give you, is to take them with a grain of salt. If you can get just one person to think and do some homework, you've done a good job. Unfortunately, our society has degraded and people insist on instant gratification... they feel entitled to getting something for nothing. That's the root problem. They want TV, fast foods, and drive everywhere. Since I began taking the time to read, make wholesome meals, and walk as much as 8 miles a day, my (type two) diabetes has reversed enough to where I no longer need meds. Who would have thought? (sarcasm)

If you think you can get more people to slow down, read and research, and think.... well, good luck. I tried telling my doctor the benefits of my research, the healthy diet, and the exercise program. You know what she said? That the average person won't do it and that I'm the exception to the rule. (Basically, she can't be bothered). It takes too much time and effort. I guess these folks would rather die a slow, miserable death and the doctors don't mind helping them with more and more drugs instead of sitting them down and explaining what it's going to be like going down the tubes.

To quote Kansas, "All we are is dust in the wind"

Okay ... ) I have so much to address in your post, that I started writing a book. It's too much ... so I got rid of it, and I'm going to give you the abridged version.

I hope I don't offend, but I don't agree with some of what you said.

First of all, your description of diabetes is more for type 1 than type 2. Type 1 comes on suddenly, where type 2 may take years to get to the point you described, if it's not caught first.

When I complain about bad answers, I do it because I feel it could be damaging to someone coming here for advice. If something bothers me, but it's not doing any real harm, I won't say anything because I think it's wrong to hurt others feelings unnecessarily.

The "frequent fliers" you refer to ... I can only think of one. And she doesn't want diabetes. She asks a lot of good questions, and she's not doing anyone any harm, including herself. So why do we need to hurt her feelings?

I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant, and I turned to the Internet for support. I didn't believe I had it at first. So I asked questions (not here, Y!A wasn't around yet) because it made me feel better to do so. Most people who come here and ask if they have diabetes either have it and are looking for reassurance, or think they have it and know they will have to go to their doctor eventually, but maybe are a little nervous. Or maybe their appointment isn't for a while yet. Or maybe they don't have medical insurance and have no place to go?

Plus ... the symptoms you get on web sites aren't always clear. If someone is super thirsty and peeing a lot, has headaches and nausea, but they're putting on weight ... do you see where I'm going with this? There are some symptoms people always have. And there are some symptoms that will always show up before others. When people come and ask questions I try to clarify that.

We don't want to drive off people who want to ask questions. We just want to drive off the people who are giving out bad advice, right?

Also ... you can't make assumptions about the people that kids have to go to with problems. Some parents don't like to take their kids to doctors, for religious reasons or maybe they're just neglectful. And school nurses ... you should have seen the one I had in school. She had no business being a nurse. I won't go into details but I shudder to think what might have happened if I developed type 1 as a teenager. I might have collapsed dead before anyone noticed.

So, if you are a teenager and both your parents and your nurse don't think you have diabetes, they are probably right, but if you are very sure then don't stop trying to find someone to listen.

Gosh Mozz, I hope you're not upset with me. I'm not trying to critisize you, just trying to give my point of view. Take it or leave it. Take care )

--edit--

Oh, and Mr Peachy ... I'm the one who thumbed you down. Please feel free to return the favor. Why do you have to be so mean? Sure you did well for yourself ... why don't you encourage others instead of putting them down?

Come on people! you guys are all crazy for asking all us idiots on Y!A if ya got some sort of disease like diabeetus!

I swear I see "what are the symptoms of diabetes?", "does eating too much sugar cause diabetes?", and "Do I have diabetes?" at least 3-4 times a day. Its not that hard to google symptoms of diabetes. the "do I have diabetes?" questions are the most annoying..
