Canine diabetes - what are the symptoms?

My mother's dog is drinking a lot and peeing a lot. I told her it could be a uti or bladder stones. She asked about canine diabetes, which I do not know much about. She has a vet appointment on monday, I'm assuming they'll do a blood or urine test. Just wondering what the other symptoms are from people who have experience. It is a 4 yr old golden retriever.
Great! Everyone is so helpful. I'll call my mom and tell her to ask about the fasting. Her dog is a little overweight, but certainly not obese. I don't think she's overly hungry, so hopefully she just has a UTI.
