what is type one diabetes?

my mom was just told from her doctor that she has border lined diabetes what can i do to help her when she says she wants something with sugar in it what are somethings to give her to eat when her sugar is to low an what does peanut butter have in it to bring it to where its suppose to be when its low? or due i give her peanuts or peanut butter when she needs to bring her sugar back up?
