A question about type 2 diabetes? My husband is on metformin tablets twice daily; a total of 1000mg a day but his blood sugars are still high. He has been to see the diabetic nurse at our surgery; who says she doesn't want to increase his metformin at the moment; & that he must eat less and exercise more. All of that is fine but over the last week we have been exercising; watching what we eat and his sugars are still high... HELP what should we do ???

Ask your doctor about getting on insulin shots. I'm a Type I Diabetic so I don't know about the pills that Type II's take, but I do know that Type II's are just insulin-resistant... so the more insulin I suppose that you 'pump in' the better! That, and keep up with the exercising... My bloodsugar drops 180 points whenever I work out. I know the circumstances are different but exercise is the key... don't just watch what you eat, MAKE SURE he is eating healthy. Look at the nutrients and diet info on the labels of food... Avoid fruits (they have lots of sugar) eat whole grains and avoid a lot of protein.

Treatment for type2 is mainly to diet and excersise because when excess weight etc is lost, the diabetes sorts itself out. Medication is only occasionally prescribed, i have seen many patients given guidance and assistance with losing weight but with no meds. If the nurse isn't willing to increase the dose then theres a good reason. Your husband won't see a difference in just a week, keep at it! Good luck

im not an expert but it sounds strange to me. im getting tested for normal diabetes but try eating foods with practically no sugar like ironfoods e.g liver. im not saying he has to at these but they help your blood and might calm down his sugar levels. ask your nurse/doctor to make sure
