Risk of Diabetes?

Ok, so one of my best friends has a problem. She loves to eat. Especially sweet stuff. She doesn't eat as much sugar as many people do, but more than she should. She excercises, and is not at all overweight, but no matter what she does, she always ends up eating that extra cookie. She also is a vegetarian and eats a lot of organic stuff.She's worried about her risk of diabetes, and wonders if it is serious. Her grandma had diabetes, but other than that it doesn't run in the family. Is there a significant risk? Anything to reduce this risk? Or any suggestions for the sugar thing? Thanks!
