Will my kidneys fail cause of my diabetes?

I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I'm 41 male 5'11 210 lbs show no signs or symptoms of diabetes.
My doctor put me on Metformin, cholesterol medication and Aspirin. He told me that my kidneys are starting to fail. I asked him what that meant and all he would say was that he would re-test me in 3 months. Now I'm wondering if my kidneys will eventually fail or maybe they will be okay once I have my diabetes in control.
high blood pressure is a problem I've never had.

I'm sorry you have developed Diabetes. It's at epidemic levels. However, it can be reversed if you: lose weight, exercise, eat correctly (limiting simple sugars), take your meds, and check your blood sugar on a regular basis. You MUST change your lifestyle.

Yes, your kidneys can fail, which is why you MUST adhere to a strict life style to keep it under control. Diabetes seems to run in families and targets certain populations more than others. Other serious complications from Diabetes can occur as well.

Diabetic kidney disease takes many years to develop. In some people, the filtering function of the kidneys is actually higher than normal in the first few years of their diabetes.

Over several years, people who are developing kidney disease will have small amounts of the blood protein albumin begin to leak into their urine. This first stage of kidney disease is called micro-albuminuria. The kidney’s filtration function usually remains normal during this period.

As the disease progresses, more albumin leaks into the urine. This stage may be called macro-albuminuria or proteinuria. As the amount of albumin in the urine increases, the kidneys’ filtering function usually begins to drop. The body retains various wastes as filtration falls. As kidney damage develops, blood pressure often rises as well.

Overall, kidney damage rarely occurs in the first 10 years of diabetes, and usually 15 to 25 years will pass before kidney failure occurs. For people who live with diabetes for more than 25 years without any signs of kidney failure, the risk of ever developing it decreases.

The doctor is retesting you to see if you need to be on dialysis to eliminate the waste in your blood the kidneys are not removing.

I hope this helps. Take care my friend.

Diabetic nephropathy CAN be controlled with good control of blood sugar...but you also have to maintain a healthy blood pressure...that's sometimes even more important than the blood sugar. You didn't mention whether or not you had high blood pressure, though.

Please read this...keep yourself healthy...and DON'T leave your doctor's office again without getting solid answers!!!! Remember...you're paying him/her to get you well, and informing you about your own condition is part of managing the disease effectively.

That probably can't really be determined at this time. If you take good care of yourself and watch your diet carefully, and control your blood sugar , you may be fine. My dad was. The doctor told him the same thing. He controlled everything and was fine, never had a problem with his kidneys again and that was many years ago. Go to the doctor regularly.

Well, diabetes can certainly cause kidney damage (more in some people than others, it's not clear why), and it is impossible to stop it completely, but the process can be greatly slowed down by keeping your blood sugar under control. So although I can't promise that even if you get excellent control that your kidneys will be fine, it's definitely the best chance of keeping them functioning.
