I think my life is ruined with diabetes how can I deal with this!!?

Hey I really need help! I was trying out for the football team at my highschool and the coach told me I should try to gain some weight if I wanted to make the team. My friend is a body-builder so I asked him what was a good way to put on some weight because I really wanted to make the team. He told me if I wanted to gain weight fast to just eat a bunch of sugary foods and candies, which made sense to me because of the fat content, and as long as I kept exercising it would be alright. So I started eating everything sugary I could such as candies and snickers bars and cakes. I had a quarter of a cake every day and only drank sugary drinks, but still exercised daily to help stay in shape. Two weeks ago I started feeling really sick, but the doctor thought it was just a common virus. After it didnt go away I went back and they ran some test and it turns out I have diabetes now... I cried for days and when I went to my football coach he said no one with diabetes could
could play on the football team. when i asked my friend why he told me to do that he said he was just joking and i shouldnt have really listened to him because the idea was obviously a joke! he pretty much blew me off and now I dont know what to think because my life is practically ruined! someone please help and tell me what i should do about this!

Diabetes doesn't ruin your life. It's just a wake up call.

I was in junior high when I became diabetic and I wanted to be on the track team so I know exactly what your going threw. When being a diabetic, extreme exercise can cause low bloodsugars which of course can be really dangerous. I've lived with diabetes since I was 11 and now im 21. The best way to deal, is to try and take it one day at a time, maybe try finding some other sport thats not so physical? You should talk to your principal because that coach isnt supposed to discriminate against diabetics. He is only supposed to warn you to be cautious. You could seriously sue the school.

I feel sorry that with diabetes your coach will not allow you to play the football. You should not play a blame game, as you are now diagnosed with diabetes , forget about the past and think about the future. If you want to remain healthy you have to change your entire life style, eat low carbo, high fiber low glycemic index food, avoid sugar and sugary foods, You are already exercising , try to maintain, Eat to live and not live to eat. Don't be overweight. Still having diabetes you can live a normal life by controlling your blood sugars. Go for medical checkups quaterly that will help you know your health position.

Sugar only causes fat on a person. It came to fast for you to have caused it; because/since you are thin. It means you inherited it. And it is just a coincidence of timing. Stick to a diabetic diet or it can kill you!
Your life is more important than sports. Build your mussels up with weights. That is what will put on the right kind of weight.
Only the Type two Diabetes can be caused by gaining weight. You did not get the weight on.

diabetes is hereditary (which means it runs in the family) your father could have had it if he didn't then your grandfather could have had the disease it usually skips a generation or 2 and don't believe people who tell you if you gain weight you'll become a diabetic because that is a myth the only thing you'll get for a gaing weight is high blood pressure.

I am sorry to say you'll have to learn to live with it, did your doctor prescribed any medication yet and did he tell you that you'll be taking insulin (needle) and I think for right now he'll probably prescribe some pills for you take and instruct you on what types of food that you'll have to eat and how much

And as for your coach, prove him wrong that people with diabeties can play sports look on-line to see if you can come up with sports personalities who have diabeties and still play sports eg (hockey, football, baseball, scoccer, and gymnastics and if you find any print it out and show it to him

Diabetes is genetic, you cannot get it from eating too much sugar.

No, baby!! you didn't get it from eating all the junk food, but that helped bring it to the surface sooner than you had planned.

The coach is being discriminatory and is so totally wrong!!! If you get control of your glucose levels you can do any thing you want including playing football!!! Take the SOB to court!!!

Most type 2 diabetes is caused by your faulty genetics, even if no one in your family was formally diagnosed before you, doesn't mean much. The number has come down in the past 20 years so more people are being diagnosed every day! The doctors are focusing on the blood testing for diabetes more and more.

Ok, go to the library and get the book "Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year" Read it carefully!!!

Your life is not ruined!! It is changed!! There were 2 type 1 diabetics in the last olympics!! They didn't let any of that stand in their way! There are professional football players who are type 2 diabetics!!!

Email me privately for more pep talks!! also go to the forum at http://diabetes.about.com and post your problem. There are a couple of great guys on that forum you need to hear from! Must sign up with screen name and so on, but it is free and these guys can help you to understand that you are not alone and you are not ruined!!
