| Question about Metformin (for diabetes) and Diarrhea..?? exactly how does Metformin work ? I take 500mg twice daily, but I noticed that after each heavy meal, which is usually breakfast and dinner, about 2-3 hours later I get a bout of diarrhea, not watery, but really loose. is this a side effect or the medicine working...it appears that the food I just ate is coming out already..??      |

| metformin works by facilitating the use of your own insulin to transport sugar across the cell membrane for metabolism. The diarrhea you are experiencing is just the body adapting to the improved metabolic rate, it will pass. |
