The most important thing for you to know is he will have to watch his diet and his blood sugar levels. Depending on whether he is diagnosed with type 1 or 2, will depend whether he will be put on insulin or control it with tablets and/or diet alone. Basically heres a wee quick lessons to help you understand: Our blood sugars naturally run high because of the food we eat, in a "normal" non-diabetic for example yourself, everytime you eat your pancreas kicks in and supplys you with the correct amount of insulin for what you have eaten to bring your blood sugars down to a good level. In your boyfriends case, his pancreas has stopped working so he will have to give himself injections to replace that insulin everyone else gets. The insulin he takes will have to be adjusted in accordance to what he has eaten. Therefore- if he takes his insulin and doesnt eat enough he runs the risk of getting a low blood sugar. This is called hypoglacemia and its pretty serious. To begind with its easy to trea- any high sugar drink or some carbs will sort the problem right out. However, if you cant get access to sugar the problem can get pretty bad and can result in fits or even comas! This is especially dangerous at night because many diabetics dont wake up when their blood sugar begins to drop- so they dont know and dont treat it. therefore, diabetics need to be careful before they go to bed to have a snack. Hypoglacimic symtoms are typicalls shaking, extreme hunger, feeling tired, sweating, tingling lips or tounge or being very irratable and confused. Watch out for these signs- he may need to eat. Alcohol can also affect your bloodsugar- im not saying he cant drink but he must talk to his doctor to work drink around hid regime. In diabeties you must watch that the blood sugars dont run too high. Lots of diabetics run their sugars high in order to avoid hypos and because they skip insulin. This can have fatal results later in life and can lead to horrible implications including feet amplications and going blind. Basically all you need to know is your boyfriend will have to look after himself, exercise a bit more and be careful with alcohol- he can eat what he likes as long as its in porportion. Becomming diabetic is in no way fun but in the long run it should encourage to live a healthier life and theres nothing he cannot do so make sure he doesnt let diabeties stop him!

The first thing is finding out what kind of diabetes he has. There are several kinds. Some people cannot produce insulin, some produce too much, and others have no problems with production, but their body doesn't respond to it. The most important thing is to find a doctor who is well educated about medical treatment, change in diet, and an excercise regimen. Once that is done (and you may have to go to 3 or 4 doctors) try to find a diabetes counseling institute. They will show him how to use a blood sugar monitor, come up with a meal plan, and formalize an excercise regimen. Also, it's helpful to be supporting and make sure he takes his meds, checks his sugar often (especially at first), and follows his meal and excercise plan.

Well, im guessing he was diagnosed with type 1, usually striking under the age of thirty. Treatment for type 1 is taking supplementary insulin every day, at least twice a day. As of 2008, there is no cure for type one diabetes used by modern hospitals or institutes. HOWEVER, the Encapsulation approach for this is an bio-artifical pancreas plan. One concept of the bio-artificial pancreas uses encapsulated islet cells to build an islet sheet which can be surgically implanted to function as an artificial pancreas. Islet sheet with encapsulation research is pressing forward with large animal studies at the present, with plans for human clinical trials within a few years. Here is a blueprint of what if looks and functions like. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Bio-artificial_pancreas_with_Islet_Sheet_technology.JP G
