No one knows how you get diabetes, but it is probably NOT from eating too much sugar.
It is important to distinguish between a 'cause' and an 'association'. People who are fat, and who eat a diet high in sugars and refined starches (things like white bread, potatoes, etc.) and who don't exercises are more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. People with family members who have diabetes are at increased risk also. But there are lots of fat people, with relatives with diabetes, who do not get Type 2 diabetes.
People who get Type 1 also have an increased risk if there is a family history, but there are lots of people with Type 1 and absolutely no one else in their family has it. It is an auto-immune disease and has nothing to do with how much sweet stuff you eat.
