Gestational diabetes?

I am 29 weeks pregnant. I had my one hour gestational diabetes test today and flunked. My blood sugar was 186. I didn't eat anything for 12 hours before the exam. Now I have to go for the three hour test on Friday and I am pettrified. I have really bad veins and tend to pass out when I give blood. Have you had the three hour test? How bad was it? Also, with an initial reading of 186 what is the likelihood that I actually have gd? If I am diagnosed with gd I know that it can be managed with diet and exercise. What does a gd diet look like (i.e. what do you eat for each meal, etc).
I already saw the babycenter article. I was hoping for some personal insight.

First off, don't stress yourself out. I had the first test done too and it came out high. I had the second test (3 hours) and it wasn't that bad. I think the worst thing was was being bored. I would recommend you take a nice book or a mini project (like crocheting, etc) with you.

When I got the second test done, it turned out that I didn't have GD and it must have been something I had eaten the day before the first test.

Don't fret. Even if it turns out that you have it, you can control it with an alteration in your diet and lifestyle.

Good luck!

i am 31 weeks pregnant and i had both tests done. the first one i was supposed to be about 140 bs and i was 159 and then i had the second test *the three hour one* and i tested three out of four positive. so i have gestational diabetes now. it wasn't so horrible, i have bad veins too and i got four vials of blood drawn but because they do it every hour you have time to recouperate between each drawing. i'd suggest you bringing a good book and a pillow with you because it gets boring too. the likely hood is pretty likely from what i understand. i think each diet is specifically specified to each individual. but here's how mine is right now. @ 4-5pm i eat breakfast *because that's when I get up* and i have a meal that is no more than 45 carbs *they gave me a pictured menu of food i can and can not eat and how many carbs per item such as a small apple is 15 carbs, two small plums are 15 carbs etc.* then at 7pm i have a snack that is no more than 30 carbs, and then at 11-12 i have another meal that is no more than 45 carbs, and finally at 2am i have another snack that is no more than 30 carbs. i don't like it at all but it's worth doing so i don't have to take insulin and for my baby's health. hope this helps!

I've never been pregnant, but I have had a 6 hour blood glucose test before (to test for hypoglycemia). B/c I flunked it (meaning it showed that I was hypoglycemic AND borderline diabetic) I was miserable once my blood sugar plummeted. But b/c you are being tested for high blood sugar and the test will only be a 3 hour one (I started feeling bad around the 4th hour), you should be just fine.

I had GD with my last pregnancy in 2006. The 3 hour test isn't the easiest, so make sure you bring someone with you, in case you faint ( I didn't faint ). I do remember laying down on my hubby's lap, which helped. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact # I got with the one-hour test, but I do know that it was borderline.

The diet saved me from gaining a lot of weight in the end of the pregnancy because of the diet I followed. I never needed insulin. All it was, was a well-balanced meal low in carbs. Your OB, if needed, will probably send you to a nutritionist to discuss the diet you will need to follow if you fail the three-hour.

Remember, as soon as you deliver your baby, you will no longer be diabetic and it will all be over. They might check the baby's blood sugar levels soon after birth is all.

Oh, you will have to test your blood 4x a day (finger prick).

Good luck hun!

A lot of women who fail the glucose screening don't have gestational diabetes. 186 is really high but it's under 200 which would definitely indicate gd. Look at this site for more info.
