Has anybody ever participated in diabetes research?

My fiance is thinking about participating in diabetes research and I'm a little bit hesitant about it. It is a phase I trial, meaning they're testing it for safety. He's 23 years old. The trial is using 2 drugs, both already approved by the FDA, together. I can't remember what the 2 drugs are, but their safety has never been tested when they are taken together. I'm proud of him for helping in this research, but I'm nervous..
