The condition your mother has is called peripheral neuropathy. Medications can be taken to help with the pain, burning, numbness, or tingling. It's essential that she controls her blood glucose and get her A1c less than 7. Also, she needs to check her feet every night; it's common for people with peripheral neuropathy to step on things and not know it or get sores that they don't know about that get infected. Maybe this website can answer any questions for you and help you be sure that the doctors are providing the best care possible for your mother. http://www.diabetes.org/type-1-diabetes/peripheral-neuropathy.jsp Good luck!

Firstly I am not an expert at all so I dont know about arms and legs. But I work for a Pedorthist, he's a foot specialist who does foot orthotics and what we see in our diabetic patients in neuropathy. The patient loses sensation in thier feet so thier prone to injury & ulcers that can become infected and lead to amputation. They need special shoes which have good support are very soft and have no seams which can rub and cause blisters or ulcers. Finn Comfort orthopaedic shoes which you can find at "Walking on a cloud" or "BioPed" or your local foot care centre has Prophylactic shoes which are designed for diabetics and people with arthritis
