Advice for cutting calories and losing weight?

Hi, I'm a sophomore in high school, currently taking Advanced Wellness. I'm working on a project where I need to help an imaginary person lose weight. My imaginary person, John, is a 49-year-old male quadriplegic who is confined to a wheelchair. He is 5 feet, 9 inches tall, and weight 227 pounds.

I've already figured out that he needs to lose 59 pounds to be down to his target weight (168 pounds, according to the BMI). His current daily caloric requirement is 3419, and by the time he is at a healthy weight, it will be 2582. Since the U.S. Government advises not to lose more than 0.5 pounds per day, it will take him 118 weeks to work off his excess weight, dropping his daily caloric intake by 250 calories per week.

My problem is, I'm supposed to advise him on cutting calories, addressing Fats, Carbohydrates, and Proteins. However, I've been underweight most of my life and have no clue how to go on a diet.

What should John do to bring his Daily Caloric Intake down, and lose weight?
