| Why is the "STEP TEST" a good indicator of ones fitness? The step test is basically a test designed to measure one's cardiovascular endurance. You pretty much step up and down two staires in a matter of 3 minutes. I'm just wondering, why is this test considered a better indicator of one's fitness compared to tests such as the flexibility test, abdominal strength test, resting heart rate test, body composition test or the strength endurance test? |

| The step test requires the use of the major legs muscles, which are also some of the largest muscles in the body. It uses the body mass as the resistance. Over the course of three minutes, an average person doing this test will use both aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. The combination of these factors gives a good indication of the cardiovascular endurance: working the large muscles, using the body as resistance, and working over a few minutes to ultimately determine how hard the body (pulse rate) must work to sustain this activity. The other tests use smaller muscles, measure basal parameters, or do not stress the cardiovascular system with a real-world work load. Accordingly, they are not geared to measure cardiovascular endurance. |
