I am trying to remember a children's picture book.?

This was a book from my daughter's childhood. It was a small, narrow, hardbound book with lovely line drawing illustrations and was about a little boy who remembers his grandpa visiting him and taking care of him when he was just a toddler. The young boy's mother's father (his grandpa) died shortly after that visit and she is amazed that he still remembers his grandpa. It was a beautiful, heart-wrenching tale about memories and losing someone close to you. If anyone recalls the book, please let me know.

I think it is probably "My Grandson Lew" by Charlotte Zolotow. It is the closest, which matches your description. From reading rainbow: My Grandson Lew is a story about a little boy whose grandfather dies when he was only 2 years old. Lew remembers a lot about his grandfather, his grandfather had a big beard. It scratched Lew when he kissed him. Lew remembers his grandfather's big blue eyes. Lew's mother was surprised how Lew could picture his grandfather after so many years. This book reminded me about how I felt when my grandfather died. I really miss my own grandpa. My name is Matthew Stevenson. And the best thing about this book is it helps you remember your grandparents every time you read it.Here is reading rainbows video review: http://pbskids.org/readingrainbow/books/review082b.html.Here is the link to amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/105-0800263-6181263?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=my+grandson+lewIt looks like its been reprinted twice.
