God created the heavens and the earth in a literal 6 day period.........and He rested on the 7th.

God made it..........religion or science had nothing to do with it.

The Hebrew word for day is "yom" as in "yom kippur" or the "DAY of atonemet".

Since gases hardly have the intelligence to assemble themselves together and that coincidence cannot scientifically be credited with an act of creation I think that an intelligent creator is the only alternative.

True science is never "vs" true religion. Truth cannot conflict with truth. Science has no explanation for the intial origin of the universe where absolutely nothing had existed before. And it never will, since that event was supernatural in nature and therefore lies outside the purview of science. However, once matter, energy and time existed, science can study their interactions, including how the earth and other planets formed.
