The sun is is a huge basically spherical shaped ball of gasses composed mainly of hydrogen (H) and Helium (He). Think of it as a gigantic nuclear engine. Because of the size and the pressure and heat within its core Hydrogen atoms fuse through the process of nuclear fusion to create an atom of Helium. This process results in enormous release of energy in the form of heat and radiation. This energy is released as light and heat and travels outward from the sun to the rest of the solar system. This energy is what provides us warmth, and energy for photosynthesis, and light that makes life on Earth possible. Without the Sun we all die and freeze fairly quickly.Additionally the gravitational force of the sun is what holds the rest of the planetary bodies within their orbits. Without this our solar system would fly apart and would be nothing but clouds of gasses and lifeless rock. The Earth is where life in this solar system exists; however, the Sun makes that life possible. Without the Earth the Sun would remain as it is. Without the Sun the Earth would freeze and die.
