Why is it so offensive to some Brits when England is refered to as an island? It is easily considered one after all. I just don't understand what is so offensive about it. (I have a BS in earth science/geology so I know what an island is.)*referred*Please pardon my spelling error!

Why is it so offensive to some Brits when England is refered to as an island? Actually, England isn't an island. England is part of Great Britain which also includes Wales and Scotland. Why it would be offensive to them, I'm not particularly sure, but this may be why.

Why is it so offensive to some Brits when England is refered to as an island? Maybe 'island' stirs up images of tropical beaches whereas they would like to be thought of as a 'nation'? I mean, England /is/ a nation and, yes they are on an island, it's nicer to refer to them as a country, as a civilized group of people with government etc.
