To be a fundamentalist, Is it a requirement to be totally ignorant with the desire to make others ignorant?

Why must so many fundamentalist zealots spew their ignorance all over? For the most part, the silly science stays here in R&S - the Science sections are relatively free of that sort of deliberate ignorance and charlatanry.
