| Why doesn't Best Buy take my Bachelor's degree in Economics seriously for management positions? In August 2007 I graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. My Cummulative GPA was 3.22 and throughout college I was active in a fraternity, served in the student government Senate, and did a 1 year internship with a motel as a supervisor. Yet when I graduated the best job I have found so far is working at Best Buy in Home Thearter making $11/hr full time with health benefits. Clearly I feel I deserve a better job with better pay. My question question is why doesn't management take my degree seriously when I have applied for management positions? They all say I need retail management experience, but they are not willing to substitute 4 years of college experience for 4 years work experience. How is this fair? Also out of 5 managers in the store, only one of them has a college degree. THe general manager of the store who makes a 6 figure salary has no college education at all. Are thereany retail stores that value peoplewith college degrees???
Economics is a very difficult and challenging major. I think my degree should prove to any employer that I have critical thinking and problem solving skills. And certainly someone with my education deserves much more then $11 an hour. I'm thinking I should be making about double that which would be about $40k a year job. Does anyone have any advice what sort jobs I should look for? I dont want to quit this job until i have another one obviously. |
