What is even worse is their followers believe in them, and want to raise the taxes. I think it proves they really don't care about the economy - all they really care about it forcing people to get on the government trough (mass transit in this case).

They aren't raising taxes. They are going to take away the subsidies for the oil companies. There is no other industry that makes billion in profits and receives government subsidies.And then penalize any oil company that isn't investing in renewable energy resources.

Class warfare and election year grandstanding. Everyone knows that when you raise the costs to produce a commodity, the price of the commodity goes up. But the dems want us to believe that making production more costly for the oil companies will force them to lower prices at the pump.

I suppose we should just all be quiet and let the oil companies and the speculators just do whatever they want, run up the prices however they want and we should just pay whatever they ask, without question. At least the Democrats are trying. The Republicans, for the most part, don't even want to debate the issue.

No it will not. Putting a maximum cap on profits does not cause prices to rise. In fact, it will cause prices to fall, because the oil companies know that the huge prices will only lead to higer taxes and not profits.
