Are there any basic engineering courses in the UK where I can study from home?

I'd really like to improve my career prospects with a home learning engineering course. Ideally I'm looking for something basic to get me started, I'm not ready for the time and commitment involved in doing another degree and I want to be sure I've chosen the right subject.

Has anyone undertaken an engineering course via elearning / distance learning / home learning? Any engineering advice would be appreciated, particularly with regard to railway engineering.

Thanks!
