Can anyone recommend some books for introductory electrical engineering DIY?

I am a freshman in University, I want to actually build something in the lab. but I dont know what to start.

This is also my first year in university in ECE (Electrical and Computer Engineering). When you say that you have to build something,I am assuming that you are talking about protoboards of circuits. For us, they never gave us any book which taught us these protoboard but they gave us .pdf files which have the complete instructions and explanation of the real-life circuit elements that we need to use.
And if you are thinkign about designing something then there is a course you have to take which helps on take the steps that are necessary to complete before you design anything.
