| Why do we Plasmids for genetic engineering instead of the chromosomse OR DNA? Plasmids are used because:- They are separate from the chromosomal DNA so they can be extracted easily- Unlike chromosomal DNA which codes for proteins necessary for cell survival. Plasmids don't have many genes, so it is easier to get the genes you want without having to isolate it from many other genes.- They are generally smaller in size, so they won't use much cellular resources to replicate, thus multiple copies can be inserted into a single cell. |

Unlike plasmids, which seldom carry more than a few genes, and may be lost from the cell at any time, chromosomes can carry an unlimited number of genes and are generally stable within the cell line. |
