What is proper Myspace/Facebook etiquette?

I'm very interested in meeting new people and becoming friends with them, but I've been out of the social loop for awhile and I'm not keen on the new technology nowadays. Say if I knew someone from my class and we talked a lot, is it alright for me to add that person as a friend on Myspace or its equivalent? What if it's a lab partner or tablemate--meaning we only talk class-business and we don't talk outside class? What about if it's someone I recently met but we've only talked once? When is it NOT a good time to add someone as a friend?
Sorry, I meant to ask, how long do I have to wait until I request them as friends? I know people get creeped out if someone adds them the day they just met.

Marj has a spectacular aura about
On Facebook, I friend just about anyone I've exchanged names with, like:

1.) A new friend I met at a party
2.) Someone who's in my class
3.) Someone in a school club with me
4.) A friend of mine's close friend, who I finally met

But depending on how private you and the other person are about your information, you might want to be more or less quick about it.
