There are three things you can do:

1. First of all, realize that etiquette is largely another word for good manners. If you use common sense and respect the other people around you, you are using good etiquette. Do things like always write a thank you note for any gift you are given or for a big favor that someone does for you.

2. But you probably want to learn the RULES of good etiquette. Fair enough. I didn't know them when I started my working life, and I felt that it held me back for a little while. I was embarrassed to socialize with older, professional people. Once I started paying attention to people who seemed to know the rules, I began to be well respected myself.

For example, if you are at a formal dinner, pick out someone who is a leader at the table and whose table manners seem to be impeccable. Copy them exactly. Put your napkin in your lap when they do. Hold your knife and fork the way they do. Only order dessert if they do. Don't do anything that they don't do first. You'll probably feel self conscious, but they'll never notice.

If you can't find such a person, then pick a meal from the menu that is a medium priced item - not the cheapest, not the most expensive. Ask the waiter for a wine recommendation that will go with your meal. You'll pick up a lot of things just by watching your companions and judging their behavior, and you'll soon get the hang of it.

3. You can also read about the more detailed rules in any number of quality etiquette books. Walk into a bookstore and ask to see the etiquette shelf. The salesperson can help you select a popular book that will give you some good ideas on how to behave in any given situation. Then go home, read it, and start practicing!

It's not hard once you read the book. You'll see how many of these 'rules' are simply common sense and good manners. They help you not to draw attention to yourself in a negative manner. They give you a sense of pride and quiet DIGNITY, and other people will soon start to notice you for positive reasons.

Far too many people don't care about etiquette these days, so the people who do care have a strong advantage. This is an easy way to get ahead in life.

Good luck!

Practice. Say "excuse me" to a friend when you brush closely. Whenever you are at a restaurant, say "thank you" when the server refills your glass and brings you your food.

Talk to your friends or family. I am sure they have all sorts of ideas or experiences they'd want to share.

Pick up a Judith Martin book on excruciatingly correct
behavior. It's not that there's an answer for every specific
situation, it's more of a sense and an attitude that can be
cultivated.
