| First of all, its spelled Mandarin. Shoes aren't important in China. It's just like where you live: some people keep them on, some take them off, usually the former because most floors are tiled. Beds are just like the one you have in your bedroom: on a frame. No, there is no toilet paper in Chinese bathrooms, always carry a small packet of tissues around with you (they're easily available at most shops). With chopsticks, never point at someone with them, stick them in anything (looks like a funeral custom), and only take what you are willing to eat, never put anything back in the main dish. When giving and receiving money (in shops), use both thumbs and index fingers to hold it. It's very respectful and this is how you will be given money. There's no need to tip - they'll run down the street after you to give back the money. I'm sure there's more but I can't think of anything. Wikitravel has a great section on it under 'respect': http://wikitravel.org/en/China |
