Kissing etiquette for the French... between men?

I have recently started travelling to France fairly regularly and back in UK have made some French friends.
I always kiss female French on both cheeks when I meet them. As for men, I'm not sure of the etiquette? I have one very close French male friend and recently, when I saw him in his "natural habitat" (France), we kissed on each cheek on a few occasions over my visit.
When do two men start kissing each other like this? What stage in the relationship? Presumably you have to be closer than when you do so with a female.
Looking forward to your responses... particularly from French people!
(For further interest, I guess the greater question it leads to, is what does it signify about the relationship?)
