Is There a Specific Etiquette to Follow in Marketing a Product to Celebrities?

My company has a new product we would like the world to see and grab on to. I do not have any formal marketing training but I wondered if sending e-mails to certain people of stature in the community showing them the product would be accepted. I would clearly indicate this is not a request for promotion because we do not have the funds to pay a celebrity to promote our product, but if a local celebrity said hey I like those, I'm gonna try them and if he happened to mention to his friends in passing what a good product it is...would we owe he or she something? Maybe free product? I need help and I need it fast so that I can present my idea to the big boss. Thanks. Lets just say the product is sports apparel.
