Is there e-mail etiquette for Japanese?

I just recieved a pen pal and I'm writing her my first e-mail. What etiquette is involved when it comes to Japanese? We should be around the same age (in college), but I'm not sure how to start off the e-mail.

Would it be with "ohayou gozaimasu" or is that too formal? Would I just say "konnichiwa"?

Also, if you could give me any other tips for e-mail etiquette for the Japanese, that would be amazing!

I know very little about Japanese e-mail ettiquette, but I think with the kind of care you take with your first e-mail, I think you will do quite fine.

Some people might ruine a relationship by getting too comfortable" "much too soon" and get sloppy because of it.

I think you will do just swell.

I would say follow common sense (aka the golden rule); be courteous and natural as you would speak plainly to anyone.

Young people, worldwide, have very few taboos and formalities these days; this I know from observation.
