What do you think is proper phone etiquette for a wrong number?

Next time just say what number are you dialing? If it's not yours say you dialed the wrong number. If it is yours say that's my number but there is no such person or company at this number. Then hang up. You would have also protected yourself by not identifying yourself.

I am a receptionist....and when I get a wrong number I just say I am sorry you have the wrong number and have a nice day and hang up.......because the next question is always.....Do you know the number? You were not wrong it was on your time.

I usually say, "Sorry, you have a wrong number." Then, if they ask for more information, I will ask what number they are calling and tell them if they miss dialed or if they need to look up the number. If they continue, I will say that I am sorry, but do not have any more time available and will say goodbye and hang up.

Our land line used to be one digit off from the local conservative talk radio station so we always got the blind early bird little old ladies calling our house at 5:30 in the morning. It's perfectly appropriate to cut a wrong number off in mid-sentence once you've explained to them that they have dialed the wrong number. Also, if they are stupid enough to hit redial (believe me.. some do), it's appropriate to either send the call directly to voice mail, or pick it up and tell them, "sorry wrong number again, please try entering the number manually instead of hitting redial" and hanging up... or if you really get fed up, take their carryout order or reservation. When they show up to pick up their order or get their table, Karma comes back into balance because they end up looking like an idiot.

Wow! You seem to be really 'bugged' by their mistake! After you said 'wrong number' you should have just hung up.

I think that you did the right thing! You knew it was not a person of old age or a young person in trouble and they were in your eyes waisting your time and your minutes, I have unlimited minuets so i don't worry about that but before when i had a plan where there was a limit on my use during the day i valued those minuets and conserved them to the fullest so yeah it would of bothered me or at least made me wonder why this person cant look the number up, maybe they didn't know how to use the simplicity of a phone book or 411 lol , this was not your task at hand and something that was not worthy of more then what you had done already. hands down and any of you who read this who has a cell and has gone over their minuets know what its like to have to keep calls at a minimum time in length

You were right, just say, "I'm sorry you have the wrong number," and then hang up, you don't have to tell anyone why you did it, its your phone.
