What do you think is proper phone etiquette for a wrong number?

I just received a wrong number call on my cell-phone. I explained they had the wrong number. But then after explaining that mine is a personal # and they were trying to reach a company so they were obviously wrong, they asked if I knew how to get the number to the company they were looking for.Am I wrong to have simply hung up at this point? They're wasting my minutes on my cell-phone and It's not my job to look up a # for someone either too lazy to find it themselves or too messy a writer that they can't read their own writting. Or maybe someone just gave them a bogus # to get them out of their hair!Non offensive nickname: I so laughed at that it's fantastic!!Lil Bear: Uh,good deeds. Have you ever stopped to help someone push their car off a busy highway? I have 3 TIMES!Also I agree IF it had sounded like a senior person or a child I would have spent time on the phone. But they sounded like 25-35. I think they know how to find the number by themselves. To Mercedes: Yes I am bugged. I didn't hang up immediately just in case they had something else to say, like oh sorry, so I was suprised by them continuing on the conversation like I was lying to them. I'm sure other people have gotten that attitude from a wrong number. The "Are you sure this isn't 555-1234?"

i think you were right to explain that they had the wrong numberif it was an old person or a very young person i probably would have chatted them up and tried to help them IF it was appropriate and IF they were niceotherwise i'd just tell them to figure it out themselvessome people eh?

Proof that there aren't any god samaritans left. So it takes a minute. Big deal. You probably owe a good deed anyways.

I always tell them it's a wrong number and hang up. I don't find it rude; they have no business with me so the conversation is over.

u said they had a wrong #. after that, then it's on them. for all u know it could've been kids playing & that would've wasted ur min for nothing.

I probably would have told them to call an operator and then hung up but, it was a stupid question for them to ask.

I think I would have just told them to call information and then hung up.

No you are not wrong. I would have hung up right after I said "you have the wrong number".

Well, we used to have a phone number that was one digit different from a Howard Johnsons' Restaurant -- yes, a very long time ago. We'd get calls almost daily for their manager, Mr. Credeco. We finally looked up the number and we all knew it and just gave it to people, with an admonition to dial carefully. You weren't wrong to hang up. They were kind of nervy to ask you for a different number. There's no reason to expect you would know it, and really no reason for you to go out of your way to find it for them, at your expense! Forget about it.
