| Is there any special etiquette you need to follow when staying over at someone's house?
for a few days. I mean friends, relatives, anyone really. I usually take a gift, offer to help in the kitchen. Anything else?

Yes, pick up after yourself. Show some appreciation for small things like snacks, meals and their hospitality. Don't do as my in laws do and take advantage of the people you stay with and trash their home.

Just be yourself ( nothing worse than a fake person ) and make sure to thank them for any food or kindly acts. BE sure to offer your assistance. Good luck =]

Help out - nothing worse than having people stay who sit and expect to be waited on. Why not offer to pay for a take-away one evening and after the visit send some flowers as a thank you.

Sounds like what you're doing is perfect. You don't want to seem annoyingly grateful. A small gift, a helping hand, and be sure to actually say "thank you" at the end of your stay, and you'll be sure to get invited back. Another nice idea, if you can afford it and it is a small enough household, is taking them out for a nice dinner at the end of your stay.

Rule number 1 - imagine if people were staying with you and think of the sort of behaviours or habits that they may have which would annoy you. Then try and put yourself in your hosts position. That is, try and find out the "house rules" before you go.Rule number 2 - do things their way. For example, if they never smoke or kick off their shoes then you shouldn't either (a bit extreme but you see what I mean).Rule 2A - don't hog the bathroom or toilet.Number 3 - wait to be invited before indulging yourself "at table" but don't refuse if you're offered more and you really like it. If you don't like it then plead minor stomach fulluness or allergy (easy if there is stuff like seafood on offer).Number 4 - always offer to help, and mean it.number 4A - if the host(ess) has a hobby that you can share or show an interest in then please show it.Number 5 - try not to break wind (either end) at table.Number 6 - if you're feeling relaxed and "at home" after an hour then you've cracked it!
