What is proper etiquette when speaking to a deaf person?

I work with a man who is completely deaf. Since we work for the county government there is enough money in the budget to have a sign language interpreter follow him around at all times. I asked him what he, personally, considers respectful and he said for a person to speak to his face directly and if he can not understand then they should ask his interpreter. This makes perfect sense and was what I was doing even before I asked.

But what if someone does not have an interpreter with them at all times? Is there anything that is generally considered disrespectful when speaking to a deaf person? Is the guy I work with just different and most deaf people would prefer that you speak to their interpreters?

I think his advice of looking at them directly while speaking is the best thing you can do. many deaf people can read lips and it would probably help to not speak too rapidly. you could also try learning a few signs to help you out, he'd probably appreciate that and so would any other deaf people you encounter. i have a friend that has a deaf friend and he was able to pick up signing really quickly just by hanging out with his friend.

I work Retail and I'll write notes back and forth with the deaf customer. Last week, I was writing and as I'm short and the customer was tall, I turned so he could look over my shoulder as I was writing it--it felt more like a conversation that way.

I'd say that smiling and trying to find a way to communicate-pointing, walking with them to where they need to go, speaking clearly and slowly, or note writing--would be appropriate. Good for you that you care and want to learn.
