Hi You can always travel to india at any time of the year coz Climate vary from place tp Place. Mumbai will be hot starting from april mid till august. What people usually do is that it is vacation time in India when schools are closed-usually April to July last they travel south or visit hill stations. If you are planning to come during this time then you can visit hill stations like Ooty, Kodaikanal,-This places are In South of India or kerala where the climate is moderate and is beautiful place to visit.
India has become expensive these days. You need to be very careful carring money, I would suggest u use traveller's Chek and ATM cards. Ideally USD 5000 should take care of your stay and travel and food.
