| I have a family member who I believe needs to apply for SSI....I need... ...pointers....HELP!? I have a family member that lives with my Grandma. My grandma has recently become very ill and I am concerned for what may happen to my uncle. He works at a party store near home sorting bottles for $40.00 - $50.00 a week. He has steadily held this job for about 20 years, but this is the only job he has ever had. I believe he was diagnosed with dislexia in his teenage years. He applied for SSI but was declined about 10-15 years ago. My dilemna is, I don't know what he will do for income when my grandma passes away. I plan to take him for applications around town, but I fear we will not find something for him. His mind is like a childs, which does not comprehend bills and "grown up" daily life. HELP PLEASE!! |

| It sounds like more than dyslexia hon. First thing you should do is get him to a mental health clinic, and have him properly screened and diagnosed. Once you have an official diagnosis, you can help him to apply for SSI. 10 years ago, the government wasn't big on awarding SSI for mental illness, but times have changed and they are more aware of the debilitating effects of mental illness. I wish you and your uncle the best of luck! |
