traveling solo to china and friends and family are telling me to be careful

and not to go? I am wanting to go to china and go to the olympics this summer in august, however, i am wondering about everyone who i am close to telling me not to go. i mean i always wanted to see china so badly, people have their countries that they want to see, italy, australia, france, united kingdom, etc. mine is and always has been china. i do not know why but it has. i want to see the great wall, forbidden city, some temples, go shopping, and watch a game or two of the olympics, as well. they are telling me that it is dangerous to go now and i will be carrying a lot of money for the first time. this is my first time traveling by myself and it is so far away, they are more nervous than i am. i am so psyched and not worried about anything, how can i make them see it from my eyes? i know they care about me and respect that fact but would like to know how to handle this situation.

Suggest you take a tour or find someone to go with. Our daughter went on her own and when she was shopping a man tried to force her into a taxi. She met some Austrailian people who told her when they we trying to purchase purses to take home they ended up in a house guarded by men with guns and were not allowed to leave until they made a purchase. Said she would never go back on her own again.

you know , the westen media always exaggerate the situation in China, exaggerate their air condition, exaggerate their human right, exaggerate their criminal rate. that's too unfair.

I am now in Shanghai China, it's fine and is totally a modren city.
