| How does a person legally commit a family member who is abusive to the family and dangerous to herself? 41 year old sister is verbally abusing our mother, she has a history of drugs, has tried to commit suicide at least 4 times since she was 18. Has been in rehab around 4 times. Calls everyone in the family any time day or night to complain about how her life is miserable and it's all our mother's fault. Mother has been trying to help her for 20 years and has given up trying from all the abuse. Mother is approaching 70 and I'm afraid my sister is going to cause her medical problems eventually. I am seeking to find a way to commit her to an institution for help but all I hear is that she has to be asked if she wants treatment. She has to be asked permission to conduct a mental evaluation. She of course thinks that nothing is wrong with her at all. She is delusional, she has thought the FBI was chasing her, that people have been breaking into her apartment and stealing things. It's frightening and all I want is to help her and to help my mom before it's too late. |
