Do you have any family members in prison or with drugs/alcohol problems? How...

...does that make you feel? I have some alcoholics in my family and some family members in prison. It's really depressing and painful, not to mention embarrassing. But mostly, painful, because I love some of them, and it hurts for me to see my family go through so much because of them. Do you have any family members in prison or with drugs and/or alcohol problems? How does that make you and your family feel?

Literally EVERY member of my family has one of those problems. It makes me feel isolated, and I constantly fear going down the same route as them...The disgust me on so many levels, yet I still feel loyalty to them...
My emotions with them constantly contradict each other.

I have at least three family members with alcohol problems. I try not to think about what they are doing with the alcohol that they are so incredibly addicted to. My family is in denial taht they have a problem, which makes a lot of the things worse.

Yes and yes and had a few over the years. Some people make mistakes. If you are imbarassed by this then i supose you are also the same when one of your teenage children dress gothic or get thier first tatoo. Your kids make decisions just like other family members do. a good person can make a bad mistake and some bad people get caught. No it does not bother me because my friends know who i am and how i am. It is in no way painful or embarassing. Just joke a little about it and go on.

I do not want to sound mean in this next sentence. Get over worring what anyone thinks about you and live the way you should and people will think of you for the way you are. An ex in jail? No problem he made a bad choice just like someone else. You can not help that you are who you are. Are you not showing that you are careing by going to see these family people and supporting thier correction?

Yes I have two family members in prison... yes it hurts but I llok at it like this what got them there in the first place could they have helped not getting in there. Both my cases were over stupidity and now guess what??? they are all broken over it but you got yourself in there. One of my family members has been there for 12 years and it was for drugs do you think he learnt his lesson? No becasue he is ready to be realesed in 2009 and already talking about making it to the top fast and you knwo what that means going back to selling drugs so therefore no i don't feel bad because you did not learn your lesson... While I am out here busting my behind working to make a better life for myself and my family there are lots of people like him no kind of mentality so I say go on with your life and don't stress it life is short and you never know when its gone so enjoy yours and don't worry about anybody else...

As the daughter of an alcoholic mother, I have probably went through every possible negative emotion because of this. I have had them all and they've come in stages. Most of all resentment, though. I had to grow up like that and it was so HARD! I wish that on no one. Best thing to do is just hope for the best because the only person that can "save" them from this is themselves. You or any other family member can try to change them but they have to want to themselves. An intervention may help but I really don't think it's a long term cure. All I can say is that my heart is with you. Good luck and try to keep your own life on track and learn from their mistakes. Someone needs some good out of this situation.
