Pit bulls are some of the absolute best family dogs around. Why is everyone scared of them?

They're loving and sensitive and great with kids. How come people won't adopt them from the Humane Society? I have a couple big terriers myself (they aren't pit bulls though). I have an Irish terrier and a Soft Coated Wheaten. But I definitley would consider adopting a bull terrier (pit bull) or a Staffordshire terrier.
