being a single income family fighting to keep my mortgage current it is getting tougher?

I have some 5 year old unpaid debt 12k credit card . why would it take them so long to come after me? 3 years ago they sent me a summons for a court date which I turned over to my attorney! havent had to show up in court yet! the statute of limitations is 6 years in ct
I dont show any judgements on my credit report ? and I have other credit cards on a careone account and what I am paying them is pretty much tapping me out as far as leftover cash ! I dont want to purposely not pay its just that I want to keep my mortgage current as well as food on the table and gas in the car which by the way has any one moved their gas budget near the top of list in regards to expenses it is 3rd on my monthly budget pad mortgage food gas ! careone states that if a court date is set up on the five year old debt I can just add it to my present account last minute???????????? any one go through this ????? thanks in advance for all replies! constructive critisism included.
