How to help someone with the loss of a family member?

Theres this guy i fancy, but i dont think he likes me like that
so i just treat him like i would my best friend
And a few days ago, his family member died, he was the same age as us , what can i do to let him know that im here for him because i know hes upset but he just wont show it..i want him to know that he can always talk to me even if its because of the loss of someone close to him
I dont want to say something to make him upset
Can anyone help?
Any advice would be great thanks
Or should i just not mention it incase he gets upset?
Its not going to be in person it will be on msn because im not going to see him a while
