| Obamacons: Between Hussein Obama and Bill Cosby, whose family is more rooted in the tribulations of African-Am
...African-America? Did Obama's father and grandfather humbly correct the misperceptions of their fellow good-hearted (but mistaken) American neighbors by marching in the Civil Rights demonstrations of the sixties? Did they instill into young Barack the painful stories of his ancestors' enslavement? Did they admonish him to recall that more than 300,000 Americans (of 'other than African descent) fought and died to perfect the belief that all men are created equal? If so, how? Did ANY of Obama's ancestors from either his Mother's or his Father's families EVER share the upward struggles of the "African-American Experience"? Isn't Obama really neither more nor less than a first-generation rich-kid raised IN white American BY a white family? Am I missing something? When I compare him to Bill Cosby, I see Arrogant Ant in the shadow of giant "Bootstrap Bill" - a man whose involvement with Civil Rights is personal and real. Your Thoughts? ==+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+== Bingo, Icmpca! You said it better than I ever could. Thx. As for the answerers who assumed I'd vote for McCain...I see them as "Obamacain", really. Beyond wrinkles and tan, there's no substantial difference. The issue (as the question clearly lines out) is that there is NOTHING in Obama's figure-head show-boating to equate him to nor ally him with the true and gutsy Americanism displayed by the likes of Mr. Cosby. ... ==+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+== Love Canada: I was too young for some marches, not born yet for many, though I'm 1/32 African. I have close relatives who've married into American families of African and Mexican lineage. I know them quite well. To assume (a) that I don't know any such person and (b) that Obama is, in any way, familiar with the struggles that challenged and strengthened them suggests delusions of telepathy. Ms. Rationalist: Agreed on some points. But I've found that the few who still make race an issue are increasingly those most desperately powerless & least able to see beyond physical attributes and/or focus on issues. As such, I doubt he faced a fraction of the exclusion from society known to real Americans of African descent. As for Mr. Cosby, entertainers are put under the microscope as much as, and usually, far more than politicians. Note Britney Spears. Mr. Cosby believes in self-sufficiency and preaches it nationally. ... |
