You should tell your family member to bring it to an antiques souvenir shop and have it examined to determine from what culture it belonged. If it is indeed of an ancient origin, what was its use? A royalty symbol or a religious artifact? There they can give an advise what should be done with the ring.

somebody probably dropped their ring into the ocean on accident or purpose or something. don't get to excited. archeologists metal detect water with VERY high powered machines, i'm sure they would have found it. and why would a rich egyption go by the beach? to egyptions back in the day all waterr except the nile was unholy.

I would be interested in seeing it. Perhaps take it to a pawn shop and ask what they think?

If it was found in the 50's and was evidentally in the ocean for awhile before that....it is pretty old. I could be wrong, but jewelry of that nature wasn't typically worn as costume jewelry before the 1950's. You may have something there.
