Is it normal to buy a cake for a birthday of a deceased member of the family?

That happened a while ago. I'm not originally from the UK and we don't do it in my country. Anyway, I was in a friend's house and I was offered a piece of cake and then he told me it was the birthday of o close relative who had died a few years ago.
