| How do you write about things knowing that your family and friends will
read them later? Sometimes I find myself censoring what I write just because I worry what my friends and family will think. I want to quit doing that.

Silencing your inner critic is the challenge of every artist. Part of your inner critic is the one that whispers to you about what everyone else will think. The only way to do it is to concentrate on writing as if you will be the only one to see the result for the first draft. Just write. Don't correct your spelling, grammer, or anything, just go for it. Then put it away for at least a couple of hours. Come back and read it with a fresh eye, revising as you go, but be gentle on yourself. If you start to worry, just tell yourself no one else has to see it until you are good and ready or even ever. Failure is a part of every eventual success. It also helps to find someone you can trust to be kind and objective to read your final version and offer comments about the structure, whether it makes sense from one section to another, etc. and Good Luck! Keep at it.

This happens to me too sometimes. And though I think it's sort of a bad thing I think it's a good thing as well. I'm an optimistic sort of person that likes to see my cup as "half full" so to speak and so I think that knowing that friends and family will read my book later it motivates me to do better than I would not knowing that they would read it. Friends and family should be supportive and not judging and that's exactly what they will be. They will be beyond proud of you for your major accomplishments. Sometimes in writing though you've just got to ignore those critical voices in your head and just write, not caring about what others may think. Some of the best writers write without one doubting second thought. Try your best and try try again. Perservere. If the public doesn't like a book one way change it up a little bit. You may get a couple of "sorry we can't publish your book letters" but so what? Failure is part of the journey to any sort of sucess. A good friend/ family member will like you no matter what you do. No matter what you write. Remember this. They will be there to cheer you on in the good times and give you a shoulder to cry on in the bad. Don't let them ruin your writing career. Best wishes, Molly |

I know excatly what you mean, your not afraid of what other people would think about it but, your afraid what friends and family will. I have thrown down so many ideas because I don't want my family to think it is about them, i need help on this too. I think it is a hard answer.

I usually never showed my parents what I wrote; even if there was nothing risque involved, it was still too embarassing to have them see what I'd written. You should write for yourself and not worry about censoring it for others.
