My girlfriends brother had to get rid of the family dog,so he shot it.Is this normal

custom in the south? Apparently this is normal to her and her family.The dog bit her 4 year old nephew after he punched the dog in the face.So her brother took it out in the backyard and shot it.She told me hes done this several times in his life and that her grandparents and father also have done the same thing.
