How much of my family do I have to invite to my wedding?

My fiance and I are planning to get married early next year, but the invitation list is posing a problem. I want to invite only those family members that I am close to, but some people feel as if I should invite extended family as well. If I invite extended family, I'm looking at nearly 400 guests. Do I have to invite everyone I'm related to?
