So I have to choose between mine and my family last names?

My last name is Wright. My mothers last was Heisler (family name going back generations). I prefer to use the family name because I am not married and barely knew my father, whom I got the last name from. Problem is none of the naemse I like go with either. Wright is very plain jane and Heisler is of course very german so I feel like I have to pick either a boring name or a german name. I've settled on a boys name but not a girls, thats the one I am having a problem with. I've actually thought about my boys name for a girl also, it's Monroe. Any thoughts or suggestions?
The child in questions father is not in teh picture....or the state for the matter...haha!! Anyway, the child will NOT haev his last name.

Hmm.

I think you should go for your mums name.

Its what you want, and it would be a lovely gesture to the women who must have been the major force in your life. Its nice for a name not to die off just because of patriachy, especially if its what you prefer, and if the usual sources of surnames (dad and grandad) arent going to be huge and constant forces in the kids life.

Its not that big a thing for a mum and a kid to have different surnames; my mum didnt change her name when she married but my siblings and I took my dads name (she said she will always know we're her kids as she gave birth to us, but that dad might need reminding!). Its never been weird, and I know other families in similar situations.

I dont the Heisler being German is that much of an issue. Germanic names are pretty common in the western hemisphere, and all it means is someone might ask 'so, you german?', to which the kid can say 'no, but its a cool story actually...'.

Or you double barrel them or smoosh them....
Heisler-Wright
Wriesler

Monroe Wright sounds the teeniest bit better than Monroe Heisler, but theres very little in it. If you get the middle name right, it'll be nothing. Use a middle that shares letters with both names, to give it a strong 'bridging' feel.
eg
Monroe Oliver Heisler
Monroe Nicholas Heisler
Monroe Samuel Heisler

as for girls, I wouldnt use Monroe- bit masculine and the Marilyn link is a bit strong!

Good luck though!

It would probably be easier for you child if you used your last name as the child's last name. It is just easier for people to remember etc. My father had a different last name than his mother when he was a kid and he felt weird about it.

You could use your mother's last name as the middle name for a girl or a boy.

Personally I think Wright is a nice last name. It think it goes with many, different things.

I think Monroe Allen Heisler is a great name for a boy, although Monroe reminds me of Marylin Monroe, and for that reason I like it even a bit better for a girl : Monroe Elise Heisler or Evelynn Monroe Heisler. I love the last name Heisler, it's strong and has a lot of personality :-) Monroe is an excellent name choice:-) Kudos!!!
